The Coaching Manual: Investment to support international expansion

Gateley Legal

The Coaching Manual is a digital platform, specifically designed to educate grassroots coaches and act as a coach/player management platform for large coaching organisations/clubs, ultimately improving coaches and their players.

The business was founded in Manchester by brothers Terry and Chris Barton, who identified the lack of expertly curated and accessible football coaching material to players, coaches and parents in grassroots football and a market with 300 million international participants. As such, the brothers set out to transform the way coaching is provided by producing an interactive, digital platform using cutting-edge software tools and bespoke content filmed at a Premier League Academy.

Since its inception, The Coaching Manual’s innovative product offering has proven successful in the UK through all levels of coaching from grassroots to elite level and has been adopted by leading UK professional clubs and coaching organisations. The company has also developed strong relationships in the US market and is now being adopted by multiple national and regional governing bodies comprising of hundreds of thousands of grassroots soccer coaches and players.

Gateley Plc’s support on this transaction was invaluable, given that we were dealing with a number of investors with very different backgrounds and expectations.
Terry Barton, Co-founder, The Coaching Manual

To continue its rapid expansion across the UK and the US, the business secured £775,000 of funding from Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund (NPIF) Maven Equity Finance and a consortium of investors led by ex-England football international, Danny Mills. NPIF Maven Equity Finance is managed by Maven Capital Partners and provides flexible equity and debt finance solutions to SMEs across Northern England.

Our advice included advising The Coaching Manual on the principal documentation relating to the investment from NPIF and the other investors, including negotiating the investment agreement and articles of association, the variation to its existing facility arrangements and the drafting of service and consultancy agreements.

“The backing and Investment from Maven alongside Danny Mills, with his industry specific knowledge, further validates the opportunity that we have in front of us to make football better globally. Gateley Plc’s support on this transaction was invaluable, given that we were dealing with a number of investors with very different backgrounds and expectations.” Terry Barton, Co-Founder of The Coaching Manual
