Corporate Social Responsibility - Gateley

It’s not a great phrase is it: Corporate social responsibility?

It sounds too official, too formal; in fact, the opposite of what it is intended to celebrate and support.

For us, we talk about how Gateley Gives and how we give to
•    the communities in which we operate;
•    the people who work within our business; and
•    the cities in which we operate

Gateley Gives because people and places matter. Where we’re based and the people that we work with are a vital part of conducting our business.

Gateley gives to our community

Across our business, we’ve raised more than £1.5 million over the past decade for our chosen charities and community projects, as well as donating many hours to support these very deserving causes. Recent projects include:

  • Tour de Gateley – Over the last three years we have organised charity cycle rides encouraging staff, clients and professional athletes to join us. In total we have raised over £16,000 by getting on our bikes!
  • Candlelighters – In 2018 our Leeds office supported this charity which supports families facing children's cancer in Yorkshire. Across the year, different events took place from a treasure hunt to pancake tossing to bake sales and dress down days in the office.
  • The Foundation for Conductive Education – We raised nearly £30,000 for a national charity that helps children and adults with neurological motor disorders. We hosted a 5km run and family fun day and the money raised secured the charity’s parent and child service for at least six months.
  • Anthony Nolan – Anthony Nolan is a pioneering bone marrow and stem cell research charity, seeking to find the cure to blood cancer. We raised over £11,000 for Anthony Nolan and also recruited 21 members of staff to the donor register. The fund raising activities included dress down days, bake sales, sweepstakes, half marathons – even the London Marathon!
  • Evelina Children's Hospital – Staff from across our London and Reading offices came together to run 10k to raise money for the Evelina Children's Hospital. The hospital is currently expanding to meet demand, as the number of children needing their care has increased hugely over the past ten years.
  • The Great Gateley Bake Off – Staff from our Manchester office took part in a “bake off” style event with four of our Manchester based partners having the difficult task of deciding on a winner! The event saw creations both large and small enter the competition to raise money for the Bone Cancer Research Trust.

Gateley gives to our cities

  • The Big Hoot, The Big Sleuth and Hoodwinked – We supported these Wild in Art city projects in Birmingham and Nottingham. Connecting businesses, artists and communities through the power of creativity, Wild in Art events have enabled more than £12 million to be raised for charitable causes to date and helped millions of people of all ages to experience art in every day settings.
  • Food banks and clothing banks – We have permanent boxes in our offices to give our staff the opportunity to donate items such as non-perishable food, drinks, toiletries and clothing. We donate these items to various local foodbanks and community groups that support the homeless on a regular basis.
  • Buddy Bag Foundation (BBF) – Our Birmingham office has chosen the BBF as its charity partner for the next 12 months. The BBF makes a huge difference to the thousands of children entering emergency care each year by providing them with ‘Buddy Bags’ to restore a sense of safety, comfort and security in their lives.  The Buddy Bags contain a hand-knitted teddy bear, as well as essentials such as pyjamas, toiletries and books, which can help make the transition into emergency accommodation that little bit easier.

The principle of giving something back extends beyond charity or voluntary involvement. With a network of offices across the UK, we’re immensely proud of our home cities, which is why we’re also patrons of local business and professional organisations.

Gateley gives to our planet

We’re actively committed to reducing our carbon footprint and to working with clients to help reduce theirs – because as businesses continue to grow and global trade expands, we’re all living and working in an increasingly small world.

We have introduced a number of initiatives to help reduce our impact on the environment, such as recycling points in each office, using recycled and thinner stock paper and promoting the use of video conferencing technology rather than travel between our offices.

Environment, social and governance (ESG) matters

As a provider of legal and professional services, the maintenance of the highest ethical standards is core to our business and the services we provide to our clients. But the provision of client-focussed services does not come at the expense of the needs of the wider society and our environment. Our policy is to support communities and charities local to our offices but our activities also provide support to national and international communities and charities.
